What is Schema Markup? A Simple Guide for Business Owners
Donovan Fawcett
Schema markup is a special type of code added to your website that helps Google understand what your content is about. Think of it as labelling: instead of Google having to figure out that "0800 123 4567" is a phone number and "Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm" are your opening hours, schema markup explicitly tells Google exactly what each piece of information is. This helps Google display your business information more accurately and attractively in search results.
WHAT SCHEMA MARKUP LOOKS LIKE IN SEARCH RESULTS. You have seen schema markup in action even if you did not know what it was. Those star ratings that appear under some search results? Schema markup. The FAQ dropdowns that expand to show answers directly in search results? Schema markup. The business hours, phone numbers, and price ranges that appear in some listings? All driven by schema markup. These enhanced search results (called "rich results" or "rich snippets") take up more visual space in search results and dramatically increase click-through rates. Studies show that rich results can increase clicks by 20-30% compared to standard results.
THE MOST IMPORTANT SCHEMA TYPES FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES. LocalBusiness schema tells Google your business name, address, phone number, opening hours, service area, and geographic coordinates. This is the foundation and should be on every local business website. Service schema describes each service you offer, including the service name, description, and the area you serve. This helps Google match your business to specific service-related searches. FAQPage schema marks up questions and answers on your website. When implemented correctly, Google can display these as expandable FAQ sections directly in search results, giving you significantly more visual real estate. Review schema marks up customer testimonials and ratings, potentially displaying star ratings in your search results. BreadcrumbList schema shows your website navigation hierarchy in search results, helping users understand where a page sits within your site structure.
HOW SCHEMA MARKUP HELPS YOUR SEO. Schema markup does not directly boost your rankings -- Google has stated this clearly. However, it helps in several indirect but powerful ways. It improves click-through rates by making your search results more visually appealing and informative. Higher click-through rates send positive signals to Google about your content quality. It helps Google understand your content more accurately, ensuring you appear for the right searches. And it enables rich results that give you a competitive advantage over businesses that have not implemented schema.
DO YOU NEED TO KNOW CODE? No. While schema markup is technically code (written in JSON-LD format), you do not need to understand it yourself. Your web developer or SEO agency handles the implementation. Many website platforms also have plugins that can add basic schema markup automatically. The important thing for business owners is understanding what schema can do and ensuring it is being implemented on your website.
Common
SCHEMA MISTAKES. The most frequent errors we see include missing schema entirely (found on 90% of small business websites), incorrect information in schema (phone numbers or addresses that do not match the actual business), schema that does not match the visible page content (Google requires that schema reflects what users can actually see on the page), and overly generic schema that does not take advantage of specific types like Service or FAQPage. A proper SEO audit will identify and fix all of these issues.
