SEO for Beginners: What is SEO and How Does It Work?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is the practice of improving your website and online presence so that Google shows your business higher in search results when potential customers search for the services you offer. The higher you appear, the more people see your business, the more people visit your website, and the more enquiries you receive. That is SEO in one paragraph.

HOW GOOGLE ACTUALLY WORKS. Google's job is to find the best answer for every search query. When someone types "plumber near me" into Google, it needs to instantly decide which of the millions of plumber websites to show first. It does this through three steps. Crawling: Google sends out automated programs (called "crawlers" or "spiders") that follow links across the internet, discovering web pages and reading their content. Indexing: when a crawler finds a page, Google stores it in a massive database called the "index." Think of this as a library catalogue of every web page Google knows about. Ranking: when someone searches, Google looks through its index and ranks the most relevant, authoritative, and trustworthy pages first.

THE FACTORS THAT DETERMINE YOUR RANKING. Google uses over 200 factors to decide rankings, but the most important ones for local businesses are relevance (does your website content match what the person searched for?), authority (do other reputable websites link to yours?), user experience (is your site fast, mobile-friendly, and easy to use?), local signals (is your Google Business Profile optimised with reviews?), and content quality (is your content genuinely helpful and comprehensive?). You do not need to be an SEO expert to understand these factors. If you have a fast website with good content about the services you offer, a Google Business Profile with plenty of reviews, and a few quality links from relevant websites, you will rank well for local searches.

SEO VS PAID ADVERTISING. Google shows two types of results: paid ads (marked with "Sponsored") at the top and organic results below. Paid ads cost money every time someone clicks -- typically £3-15 per click for trades businesses. Organic results cost nothing per click. SEO improves your organic rankings. The key difference is longevity: when you stop paying for ads, your visibility disappears immediately. When you stop actively investing in SEO, your organic rankings persist for months or even years. This compounding nature is what makes SEO the highest-ROI marketing channel for most local businesses.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF SEO. Your Google Business Profile is the most important element for local businesses. It controls your appearance in the Maps pack (the three business listings shown with a map at the top of local search results). Optimising your profile with complete information, photos, and reviews is the single highest-impact action you can take. Your website needs to clearly describe what services you offer and where, load quickly on mobile phones, have separate pages for each service and each location you serve, include your phone number and contact form prominently, and feature customer reviews and trust signals. Content is what tells Google what your website is about. Every page on your site is an opportunity to rank for a specific search term. A page titled "Solar Panel Installation Essex" tells Google that page is relevant when someone searches for solar panel installation in Essex. The more helpful, detailed content you have, the more searches your website can appear for.

Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. They act as votes of confidence in Google's eyes. The more quality websites that link to you, the more Google trusts your site. For local businesses, the most important link sources are local directories, industry associations, and local news coverage. Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people choose to click on your listing. A business with 100 five-star reviews will always outperform an identical business with 5 reviews in terms of both visibility and conversion.

HOW LONG DOES SEO TAKE? This is the question every business owner asks, and the honest answer is 3-6 months for meaningful results. Some clients see results faster -- Sola UK achieved Local Pack rankings in 16 days, and ALPS Electrical received 20 form submissions in 5 days. But these are exceptional results from well-executed strategies with favourable conditions. A realistic expectation is: months 1-2 for building the foundation, months 3-4 for rankings to start climbing, months 5-6 for consistent lead generation, and month 6+ for compounding growth where results accelerate over time.

Should

YOU DO SEO YOURSELF OR HIRE AN AGENCY? You can handle the basics yourself: claiming your Google Business Profile, asking customers for reviews, writing helpful blog posts, and ensuring your website describes your services clearly. However, technical SEO, link building, content strategy, and competitive analysis typically require professional expertise. Most trades businesses invest £1,500-3,000 per month with an SEO agency and see returns of 5-20x their investment within 6-12 months.

NEXT STEPS. If you are new to SEO, start with three things today. First, claim and optimise your Google Business Profile if you have not already. Second, ask your next five customers to leave a Google review. Third, check your website on your phone and ensure it loads fast and looks good. These three actions alone will put you ahead of most of your local competitors. For everything beyond the basics, consider our free SEO audit, which will identify exactly what your business needs to rank higher and generate more leads.
